Only Eligible Visa holders can apply

The first and foremost thing is to make sure that you are eligible for the 485 Visa.

You need to apply within six months of finishing your study on a valid student visa. You can also apply if you are on a Bridging A, Bridging B or a Visitor Visa

Please note

  • Your existing Visa should not have a No Further Stay (NFS) condition. In such a case, you are not eligible to apply for any visa onshore. You have to leave the country and then apply further.

  • You are required to be onshore to apply for the 485 visa. Offshore application is not considered and not possible.

Maximum Age Limit

For an applicant to successfully apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa 485, the maximum age should be 50 years.

Why do you need a Temporary Graduate Visa?

Temporary Graduate Visa also is known as 485 Visa is designed for individuals who have recently graduated as an international student and have completed minimum 2-years of full-time study in Australia. This Visa allows students to live and work through any of the two streams – Graduate Work Stream and Post-Study Work Stream. You are eligible to choose a stream according to the qualification you just completed.

Graduate Work Stream – The validity of the Skilled Graduate Student Visa 485 is 18 months and is only applicable if you have:

  • Completed 2-yrs full-time study in Australia

  • His/her occupation should be listed on MLTSSL

Post-Study Work Stream – The validity of the VISA in this stream is up to 4 yrs and is only applicable if you have

  • Completed Bachelors, Masters or your Doctorate degree from Australia

  • A valid Australian student visa issued after 05th Nov 2011

You are allowed to include your family members (eligible) while applying for the visa.

Study requirements for Temporary Graduate Visa 485

For an individual to qualify for 485 VISA, the below conditions are mandatory:

  • Course you have pursued should be CRICOS (https://cricos.education.gov.au/) registered

  • Should be an English taught program

  • Duration of the program should be minimum 16 calendar months or 92 weeks, i.e., two academic years

  • The course should be completed while on a valid student visa

Character Certificate Requirement:

You and your family members must hold a character certificate issued after an Australian Federal Police check. The certificate should not be more than 12 months old from the date of issue at the time of VISA lodging.

Health Requirements:

You (applicant) and family members (dependants) must undergo mandatory medical examinations and should have basic health standards to fulfill the requirement.

Health Cover Requirements:

Applicants and dependants are required to have an optimum health insurance cover at the time of Visa. This is to cover your and your family’s health costs during the stay in Australia. Your health insurance issuing company can either be in your home country or Australia. Active health insurance is needed while applying for a Temporary Graduate Visa 485.

Please note:

  • If you are on a student visa, a valid OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is accepted.

  • If you are on Visitor or granted a Bridging Visa, a valid OVHC (Overseas Visitor Health Cover) is required for a temporary graduate visa application.

Debt-Free Status:

As an applicant, you should be debt-free. This means that you need to clear all outstanding debt to the Australian Government (if any). This rule is applicable to the dependants as well.

English Skill requirement:

This requirement is to demonstrate that you have a minimum level of English (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking) skills.

If you are a citizen of the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, or New Zealand and hold a valid passport, you are free from this requirement.

Otherwise, applicants can take any of the below mentioned English Proficiency Tests and provide evidence of minimum English skills. The validity of the test result is up to 3 years from the result date.

  • PTE Academic

  • IELTS

  • TOEFL

  • OET

  • CAE

Mandatory Documents required while applying for Temporary Graduate Visa 485 or Skilled Graduate Student Visa 485:

Below is an updated 485 Visa Checklist. Please ensure to keep these documents ready before you begin with the application process.

  • A valid passport

  • Photographs – Passport sized (45 mm x 35 mm)

  • Family/Relationship documents (if any)

  • Health Insurance – A duly signed letter (138 KB RTF) from a registered insurance provider

  • Character Certificate – A certificate from the Australian Federal Police (issued within 12 months)

  • Course completion documents from the education institution

  • Attested copies of course transcripts

  • English proficiency test result

  • Skills Assessment Documents – If applied in the Graduate Work Stream, you need to provide a skill assessment document that mentions that the relevant authority has successfully assessed your skills and found it suitable for the nominated occupation
